These are the kind of portraits I love doing. This was a Father’s Day commission that I have been waiting to share with you.

I LOVE using favorite photos from my patrons and recreating those memories on canvas.
My goal with each portrait I paint, is to create an instant and emotional connection between them and their new portrait.

The challenge I assign myself with each portrait commission I paint is to capture the essence of that person in a setting that brings them joy.
Every time they walk in the room and see their new painting, they will smile big and feel the joy of that moment again.
That’s a successful painting.

Happiest 21st birthday to my favorite youngest son. This kiddo is pretty awesome and has a gift for looking at the positives of in life. I just watched him open the car door for his girlfriend like the sweet abs thoughtful young man that he is. I love you Jordan. What a great day it has been!

When I was in the beginning years of having a son

When I was in the beginning years of having a son with autism, my friends were kind and accepting. It was still harder for them to understand my new world. I struggled to find the words to explain the roller coaster of emotions I was going through.
One day, a dear friend shared a poem with me. The poem, “ Welcome to Holland,” by Emily Perl Kingsley, became a lifeline for me. That poem was in my heart when I painted this mixed media piece.
Just like the poem, this painting went on a completely different journey than the one I had planned for it...and the result is so much better than what I had imagined.

When Taylor was four, he was just starting to talk

When Taylor was four, he was just starting to talk, however I think Mike and I were probably the ones who understood what he was saying.
The way he learned to finally talk was not word by word, it was phrase by phrase. EX. "Daddy can I - Daddy Come here."
In addition to speech therapy, watching his videos on repeat was essential in helping him learn to talk.
Mary Poppins was his favorite! Sometimes we would watch it all day long. He would speak the script word by word as he watched it.
Taylor's favorite part of the movie was the scene when they jump in the chalk painting and are visited by dancing penguins.
Taylor would dance with them and when Dick Van Dike stretches his pants down to look like a penguin, Taylor would do the same. It was incredibly adorable!
This memory just one of the millions of beautiful memories I have of my son when he was still considered a "non-verbal" child.
This piece is called "Penguin Dance" and is from my latest collection, "Coloring Outside the Lines". I even had to watch Mary Poppins while I painted it. I had so much fun painting this! It makes me happy!

“Control”, part of my "Coloring Outside the Li

“Control”, part of my "Coloring Outside the Lines Collection: A mother’s tale of raising a son with autism through art."

When creating this piece, I wanted to express the fight within myself of wanting my son to be accepted for who he is and protect him from the world even though subconsciously, I know I have no control over anyone. Much less, the entire world! Yet I believed fully that if I planned for things far in advance, everything would be perfect for him.

Of course, this is impossible and to convince ourselves otherwise is the illusion of control that we create for ourselves. We may think we can control what happens in our life but the truth is, we only control ourselves and for many with autism, they are unable to even do that.

As you look at this painting in sections, you can see journal writings and images and each element has been created with intention and for a purpose. However, step away from the painting and look at it as a whole and you will see more chaos than control.

"Blue Noise" is a piece from my recent collection,

"Blue Noise" is a piece from my recent collection, Coloring Outside the Lines.
The entire collection is about my life as an autism mom and each painting tells a story.
When Taylor was younger, he really struggled with background sounds distracting him.

White noise is what you and I call it and we are profoundly good at pushing that "noise" so far in the background that we don't even notice the sound.
That has never been the case for Taylor and when he was younger, I think those background noises were just as loud as every thing else in the room. He could hear lights humming, that lunchroom noise of everyone talking at once sounded like everyone was screaming. Sometimes these noises would cause him to run out of the classroom, movie theatre, church...anywhere!
So, when I was working on this collection, Taylor was my resource. I asked Taylor if he remembered how loud the gym lights used to sound to him. Then I asked him to close his eyes and tell me what colors he would see when he heard those lights.
"BLUE! Bright, bright, white-blue," he said.
I went immediately to my studio and began painting. This is NOT that painting. nope. It was a complete flop!
Then about a week later, this painting happened. I was working on the first "blue noise" painting trying to make it work when I saw this one sitting on the easel and realized THIS was "Blue Noise".

I’ll get to that but first I wanted to thank everyone who purchased raffle tickets. 100% of the money will be used for sensory devices and equipment for the Sensory Room at MVES.

This is something that is near and dear to my heart. I know how important early intervention is and how important sensory rooms are. I wish there had been something like this when Taylor was in elementary school. It would have made his life a little easier…and mine!

For this reason, Taylor and I will be raffling off four paintings. Two of my paintings and two of Taylor’s.
