How To Commission a Painting

Have you ever been scrolling through Instagram or glancing through a magazine and you see a painting that you HAVE TO HAVE! You start researching the artist and then find out that the painting you love has already sold or it is the wrong size or maybe only available as a print and you really want an original piece of art.

Maybe you love this artist style but you would like a different color palette that would fit with your decor better.

What you are really looking for is a piece of art that is made especially for you.

Art is about creating a visual for expression, feelings, emotions and connection. I will create a piece that speaks to you personally and fits perfectly in your home.

Here’s a simple breakdown on how I work with my collectors to create a piece of art that reflects who they are, what they love and will become a special element in their home.

Commission painting, "Bliss"

STEP ONE: EXPLAIN WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

Tell me what colors you are interested in. Where will you hang your art? What style of mine are you most drawn to? I also want to make sure what you are looking for is in my style of painting.

STEP TWO: SELECT A SIZE.

After the initial discussion about what you are looking for, I will give you options of various sizes that fit the space you want to fill.

If you are local, we can arrange for me to come and see the space you are wanting the piece. I will take some photos of the blank wall, so measurements of the space and will create a mock up to show you what the different sizes will look like on that wall.

If I am unable to come out to see the space personally, I may have you take some photos and measurements for me so that I can create the mockup for you.

STEP THREE: PRICE QUOTE

After the initial discussion about what you are looking for, I will give you options of various sizes that fit the space you want to fill and corresponding prices.

After finalizing these painting details I will provide you with a price quote. I collect 50% of the project fee up front before I purchase any materials.

I price all my artwork per square inch. The cost varies depending on the type of artwork you are wanting commissioned. You can find my quick glance price sheets here.

Note: If I ship the painting to you, we will discuss different options and how they impact overall cost.

STEP FOUR: EMAIL UPDATES

After the creative direction is approved, I start work on your painting and send you one or two work-in-progress shots along the way. Feedback on the piece is welcome during this stage.

STEP FIVE: FINAL SIGN OFF AND DELIVERY

When I’ve completed your painting, your final payment will be due and I’ll prepare it for shipping (or delivery if local). Once your painting has been carefully packaged, insured, and mailed, I’ll send your tracking information so you can start planning its welcome home party!

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of commissions do you accept?

My commissions range from abstract to pet portraits, to city and landscapes.

Do you paint portraits
of people?

Yes and No.
I generally don’t do full faces but instead paint the individual in a setting that is special for them.
An example and explanation of this is my painting, ReJoice!”

How long does it take for you to complete a commission?

My average time on *commissions is 8-12 weeks but will vary depending on subject matter.

How do I know what size will work best in my space?

Great question! What I will have you do is send me a photo of the wall you want the art to be on. Then you will also send me the measurements of that wall. Then, I will work up a mock up of your space with various size canvases on the wall. This will help give you a “real life” visual.

What is your billing process?

There is a 50% deposit down before work will begin on your art. The remaining 50% will be due at completion.

Do you take orders for Christmas?

Deadline for all Christmas commissions is September 30. I can still take commissions after that date but cannot guarantee it will be complete by Christmas,
